What role do you hold and how long have you been undertaking the post?
When I originally started working at Bristol Water it was as the result of a failed interview. I actually applied for a completely different position, but the interviewer thought I showed the right skills to be a district inspector and lucky for me a position was also being recruited for at the same time. Since then I have worked in various roles until my most recent position as a distribution manager.
What does a typical day look like? What does your current role involve?
My day can be very varied, because Bristol Water is a relatively small organisation you need to be able to adapt to whatever you are faced with. Day to day tasks include looking at reservoir levels and assessing with the wider team if this will impact our service to customers. Overnight leaks are detected throughout the network. In the morning one of the first things I would do is assess this information, to assist in understanding more about the status of the network, how to plan activity for the day and allocate resources.
What attributes does someone need to have in order to be really successful in this position?
Throughout the various positions I have held at Bristol Water it has always been important to be flexible. Working for a small organisation means that being multi-skilled is really useful and an aptitude to pick up work and learn is essential.
What are the biggest challenges that someone in this position would face?
Due to the variation within the role you will need to juggle multiple tasks which can often be tricky. You need to gain an overview of a situation in order to make quick decisions and balance this with not to getting overloaded with information.
What’s the difference about working here than anywhere else you’ve worked?
The approach of the management team is really forward thinking, allowing you an individual to take control of your workload and put forward new ideas seeing these through to the finish.
