Assistant Operations Manager - Planning and Scheduling
Role purpose
As an Assistant Operations Room Manager, you’ll help coordinate the people and work that keep Bristol Water’s Production assets operating safely and reliably.
You’ll plan and prioritise reactive and planned work across treatment works, pumping stations, reservoirs and other operational sites, making sure the right people are available at the right time.
It’s a busy and varied role where priorities can change quickly, so you’ll need to be organised, comfortable making decisions and confident communicating with different teams.
You don’t need to know everything about the water industry from day one. We’re interested in people with strong transferable skills who are keen to learn and develop their operational and technical knowledge.
What you’ll be doing
Plan, prioritise and schedule planned, preventative and reactive work.
Coordinate field-based teams and allocate work based on priority, availability and operational requirements.
Monitor workloads and adjust plans when priorities or circumstances change.
Use systems such as SAP Field Force Automation to create, schedule and track work orders.
Support the Operations Room Manager during operational incidents and emerging issues.
Coordinate contractors, training, site access and other operational activities.
Keep accurate records and provide teams with clear information about upcoming work.
Work closely with Production, Asset Management, Network Operations and other teams across the business.
Help ensure safety, water quality and operational requirements are considered when work is planned.
Recognise when an issue needs additional technical support or escalation.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone who is organised, proactive and able to keep a clear head when priorities change.
You may already have experience in utilities, engineering, maintenance or operations, but we’re equally interested in candidates from other environments who can demonstrate the right transferable skills.
Ideally, you’ll bring:
Experience of planning, scheduling, coordinating people or managing workloads.
Strong organisational and prioritisation skills.
Confidence working in a busy environment with competing demands.
Good communication skills and the ability to build relationships with different teams.
A practical, logical approach to solving problems.
Confidence using IT systems and the ability to learn new systems quickly.
Good attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
A positive approach to safety and working collaboratively.
Useful, but not essential
Experience in any of the following would be beneficial, but we don’t expect you to have everything:
Water, utilities, engineering, manufacturing or another operational environment.
Planned or reactive maintenance.
SAP or similar work-management systems.
Working with engineers, technicians or field-based teams.
Supporting operational incidents.
Coordinating contractors or site activities.
Most importantly, we’re looking for someone with the right organisational skills, judgement and willingness to learn. If you can see yourself doing this role but don’t meet every requirement, we’d still encourage you to apply.
Working arrangements
Primarily based at Barrow Treatment Works, with office and home working in line with Bristol Water’s hybrid-working arrangements.
You’ll participate in a rota covering 7:00am to 6:00pm, Monday to Friday.
Some additional flexibility may occasionally be required during significant operational events.
